JANUARY WORKSHOPS It's almost the end of the year and for many that means withdrawing from public school. Many families are deciding to not return to school after the Christmas break. There are a variety of reasons and each one is important to that family. Our goal is to help those who are looking for the next step after the New Year begins. On January 16, 2010, SETHSA is excited to have the homeschool stores participate together in offering help to new homeschoolers. Each of the stores will be offering a mini workshop to introduce families to homeschool and help them with all of the details for getting started. There will be staff at the store during the day to counsel with and provide necessary information to those seeking to homeschool. Please keep this event in mind for someone you know who is considering homeschooling in the New Year. You may run across someone in your church, neighborhood, or even your very own family. It's time to start studying in preparation for the 2010 Spelling Bee. The SETHSA Bee will be held on February 20, at Lindale Assembly of God Church. This will be the 2nd year that PBS/Channel 8 will host the regional spelling bee for this part of Texas. There have been several changes, some from Scripps and some from PBS. SETHSA will be sending out an email to all spelling bee coordinators with the details on how your bee should be held, and what documents are available to your participants. Event: National Homeschool Basketball Tournament
Date: March 15-20, 2010
Location: Springfield MO
The Annual National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships. In 2009 a record number 344 teams participated. The Nationals Showcase was a smashing success with almost 8,000 fans packed Hammonds Student Center to watch the High School All-American Game, 3 Point Shooting Contest and Slam Dunk Contest. Springfield, MO enjoyed the impact of around 10,000 players, coaches, and fans in town for the week. Springfield CVB recognized the tournament as the largest event in the city in 2009. The tournament will be held at more than two dozen Springfield locations from March 15 to 20, 2010. Springfield will be the site of the tournament through at least 2011.

Event: Robofest Competition

We plan to hold the Game Challenge only for both junior (5th-9th grade) and senior divisions (9th-12th grade). Team registration will open and the Challenge will be released on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009.

Students design, construct and program their robots while learning problem-solving techniques, mathematics, logic, creativity, physics, electronics, mechanics, teamwork, computers and computer programming. Started at Lawrence Tech in 2000, Robofest has grown rapidly. For 5th-12th graders.
Qualifying Competition Sites are held in March and April of 2010. Top teams from each site will qualify to move on to compete at the World Robofest Championships, which will be held on the campus of LTU on Saturday, May 8, 2010.
These competitions are open to the public with no admission charge and are designed to help promote an interest in science and engineering. All support is appreciated. There is also a Robofest event in Galveston(multiple divisions) on March 6, see website for updates/details.

The Dallas Zoo is hosting its first ever Homeschool Day on Monday, April 12th. We'll have lots of fun and educational animal presentations, keeper talks, and education booths throughout the zoo. The zoo will be filled with interactive and educational animal presentations, as well as an education booth to help provide you with science and nature lessons! Add on an interactive and self-guided backpack program when you register!
Each pre-registered Homeschool Day participant will receive a 10% discount on purchases in our gift shop and restaurant.
We are offering our school group rate ($4/child, $4.50/adult) for families who pre-register for Homeschool Day, and members of the Dallas Zoological Society are free as per the terms of their membership (we have individual and family memberships, so it just depends on which one they have).

Dozens of homeschool students demonstrated their musical, acrobatic, martial arts, and theatrical ability. Speakers were on hand to discuss various topics, and several families considering homeschooling received information. The snack shop was a success too!

McNair Hall is located in the Morris Cultural Arts Center complex. The best way to reach McNair is to exit Fondren off of Hwy. 59. When you get to the campus you will take the second entrance to the complex which is just past the main entrance. Come down the drive about 2/3 of the way and you will see Belin Chapel (on your right hand side) which is part of the Morris Cultural Arts Center. We will be in the foyer area of that Center. There is a small parking lot on the left of the drive and just behind the center is a larger parking lot. Set up will begin at 9 am and the book sale will run from 10-noon. The cost is $5 for sellers and $2 for shoppers. Please limit table size to a four foot or card table. If at all possible please leave small children at home. The location is smaller than Reliant and will not support wagons and large strollers. Please use umbrella strollers only. We will strictly enforce the rule where children Must Stay With Parentsat all times. In the McNair facility, you will find the beautiful Dunham Bible Museum with very nice glass windows. Print out several copies of the flyer in this newsletter and post them at your church, your job, your local branch of the library (ask first!), at your corner store, etc.
